If your mother approves, you go for it

Actually waking up on August 16th and realizing I didn’t have to go to office was absolutely amazing. I think I didn’t know what to do in the morning. I didn’t feel any rush. I sat and made myself a filter coffee. Filter coffee always reminds me of my mom.

So, after I wrote a massive letter explaining to my family about my decision to quit my job and go to Latin America, I remember the one person who had replied in detail. No guesses who it was… My mother obviously. (Even today, its mom who would make that first approval / disapproval call for anything)

Recently, I read this book “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and there is a fantastic quote in it – My mother had always told her kids: if you’re about to do something, and you want to know if it’s a bad idea, imagine seeing it printed in the paper for all the world to see.

And, I’m assuming this is what went through my mothers head when she got a letter from me saying Im 27 and Im exhausted. I plan to quit. I need a break.

So, here are some excerpts from her letter to me, which reassured me that I was not completely crazy for wanting to leave my job and go to the other corner of the world.

My Dear Apu,
First of all, thank you very much for sharing your feelings with me and with all of us. You mean a lot to all of us and we care for you, your life in every sense of the word. First of all Cheer up! Nothing in this world is worth bringing us down, last of all one’s job…………… But at the same time, we need to think in a  practical way about everything in our life. What I mean to say is there are different stages in our life and we should remember our duties and roles that we need to play at every stage of our life. As you have discussed about certain areas in your life and what you want to do about it, I respect your feelings about each and every one of them and at the same time have few perspectives and suggestions to offer to you.
JOB—————I think you need a Break definitely. You sound very tired and unhappy about the area of work. See Apu, from whatever I understand of the Corporate world, it is the same all over. If one is lucky, you get a boss of your understanding and your work environment has less frustrating situations. The place of Work is filled with people who want to reach the top and they will do anything to get there. People think the best part of work today is Money!!!!!!!!!!! It is a fact and we cannot deny it. You youngsters are seeing the money which our generation have not seen. This is the gratifying factor more than all other factors………I am sure you will agree. We can’t say that we don’t bother about it because it is one of the factors that gives us a certain power and independence. But at the same time it is not everything. It makes life more comfortable which you will agree. Regarding the emotional aspect that you had written about, this is something that cannot be expect in a work environment. We have different roles to play and play you must. This is a choiceless situation. We need to put on a mask and be professional in our approach. I am sure you know more about this than me. All Organisations look for results and that is all. They don’t have time for anything else. We must be clear about our role and what we are getting out of the organisation. There is nothing more to it. If we are lucky it is also a gratifying atmosphere to our liking. That is all there is to it. So, go ahead and do what your heart asks you to do.
Love you,

Mom – Thanks for the fantastic advice. And for those of you haven’t met her, here we are hanging out with John Lennon.

PS: And, mom, if you hadn’t approved, I would’ve convinced you to travel with me.
