When I hear about people staying in exotic hotels during their vacation and not really seeing anything outside the hotel room, I can’t help but wonder what happened to their curiosity. Cruise deals are a different story. In a cruise, you can’t step out. But, what worries me is when people don’t step out of their hotel rooms in a big city. I wonder… I wonder.. why don’t they ever want to explore the city, eat local food, take a walk and get lost a bit?
There are only 2 sets of adults I will forgive in this case. One set are the people with kids, who would much rather take care of the little devils in a controlled area. Second set are the people from the corporate world, who are pretty much forced to stay within the confines of the conference room in a hotel and who are so brain dead by the end of the day, they don’t have an ounce of exploratory spirit left in them. I belong to group 2, but with a little extra energy to venture out, during coffee breaks. And, sometimes a sneaky spirit to even bunk a meeting or two and explore the city.
Recently, I was in Vienna on a work trip and I couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast of the world inside the hotel room and just 50 metres outside. The only way in which my absolutely white hotel room could have looked attractive was if Quentin Tarantino had created a deadly murder scene in there.
Take your pick! But, I’m going for the colourful one. The world outside..
